Native to Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil. A member of the rhamnaceae (buckthorn) family. A drought and cold tolerant subaphyllous spiny plant. In spring the flowers emit a delicious vanilla like scent. Very rarely available as seeds.

USDA climatic zones 8a and above.
